Researchers from the University of Sheffield have harvested the first lettuce grown in an underground farm built more than 1km below the surface. near Whitby in North Yorkshire. The 12-month study, in a network of mines under Whitby in North Yorkshire, is designed to establish whether underground farming is practical and profitable way. If successful it could pave the way for other disused mines to be turned into farms.
